WBCSD, IUCN Urge Concrete Action on Sustainability at Rio+20

22 March 2012: The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have called on governments to commit to concrete action at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

In a letter to national governments, the two organizations stress that the current voluntary transition to sustainability is too slow to meet future challenges and call for the Rio+20 outcome to drive policies and actions that “mandate and reward innovative and sustainable business,” underlining that business, civil society and governments need to work together. The letter calls for governments to: instill a sense of urgency into the negotiations; ensure that commitments made since 1992 are implemented; establish predictable, stable policies to help business scale up sustainable solutions; and include in the Rio+20 outcome document an explicit requirement for companies to adopt standardized, rules-based sustainability reporting.
