UNISDR Releases Information Note on Post-2015 DRR Framework
November 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has released an information note on “Consultations in Support of a Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Resilience." The information note outlines progress on the consultation activities to date, including the emergence of key messages, such as the desire for a bottom-up, people-centered post-2015 framework.
Other key messages include the need for stronger political commitment to tackle emerging disaster risks, including climate change-induced extreme events, impacts of multi-hazards and increasing exposure and vulnerability. UNISDR reports that there have also been many calls for a stronger set of accountability measures to monitor and track implementation.
The three-page information note also outlines the consultation architecture, emphasizing the use of regional, subregional and national platforms. It lists the numerous bodies established to facilitate the consultation, including: the UN Special Representative for DRR (SRSG) Advisory Group on the Post-2015 DRR Framework; the Private Sector Advisory Group; the Science and Technology Committee; the Network of Mayors, through the Making Cities Resilient campaign; NGOs and local community networks; and a Parliamentary Advisory Group.
UNISDR says the draft post-2015 Framework will be available by early 2014. Regional and sub-regional platforms, national consultations and stakeholder meetings will be held throughout 2014 with a view to strengthen and build consensus around the draft. It is hoped the Framework will be endorsed in 2015 at the World Conference on DRR in Japan. [Information Note] [Post-2015 DRR Framework Website]
