UNDP Discusses Multilateral Agencies’ Role in Achieving Universal Energy Access

7 March 2011: The UN Development Programme's (UNDP) Environment and Energy Group (EEG) of the Bureau for Development Policy recently held a discussion on “Universal Energy Access Towards 2030: The Role of Multilateral Agencies.”

The discussion was held in response to the recent UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution that designated 2012 as International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. Speakers included members of the EEG, the World Bank Group, the UN Foundation, and the GRATIS Foundation in Ghana. Discussions covered: examples of how cost saving, low-carbon energy alternatives exist today for off-grid communities; the Global Energy Access Campaign as a mobilization tool; and the importance of mainstreaming gender into policies and projects aimed at expanding access to modern energy services.
