UN Secretary-General Issues Implementation Matrix of Rio+20 Outcomes
14 September 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has issued an “implementation matrix” of the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). Circulating the matrix to the members of the Executive Committee on Economic and Social Affairs (ECESA) Plus Principals, Ban wrote that the UN system “needs to step up its efforts" to heed the call from Heads of State and Government to better mainstream sustainable development in its work.
The 18-page matrix contains the specific mandates and recommendations addressed to the UN system and other entities. It also provides the lead responsibility associated with each action, as well as a time frame for some actions, per the Rio+20 outcome document.
Ban also noted the need to integrate the economic, social and environmental dimensions of the UN system's work, notably at country level, and he called for a systematic response to the guidance and objectives in the outcome document, including through the launch of new activities.
