gef_iati22 April 2013: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has joined the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI), which is a global open data initiative comprised of over 130 organizations working on international development.

GEF's decision to join IATI is part of overall efforts to increase transparency in its operations, according to the press release, and represents an endorsement of IATI's principles and standards.

IATI was launched at the third High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra, Ghana, in 2008, designed to help donors meet their commitments on transparency in the Accra Agenda for Action. It works to: increase access to better information at the country level; generate more collaborative partnerships; improve accountability to tax payers; empower of local communities; and provide for a better allocation of resources.

At the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Busan, the Republic of Korea, in 2011, IATI contributed to the Building Block on Transparency and was referenced in the outcome document, the Busan Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation. [GEF Press Release] [HLF-3 Website] [Publication: International Aid Transparency Initiative Annual Report 2013] [IATI Knowledge Base]
