Food, Nutrition and Agriculture Meeting Highlights Solutions for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture
June 2012: The report of the High-Level Roundtable on Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture has been published, containing various recommendations for strengthening food security and implementation of sustainable agriculture, for consideration by the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
The meeting, which was held from 15-16 March 2012, in New York, US, was hosted by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and organized by Biovision in collaboration with partners. The report, titled “Nourish Our People – Nurture Our Planet,” highlights the need for: transformation of the agriculture and food systems; establishment of a broad coalition of actors to enable this transformation; introduction of an enabling framework, including the introduction of mechanisms that improve the economic environment for food producers adopting more sustainable and resilient methods, and mechanisms that encourage sustainable consumption; strengthening of the science-policy interface; leadership by the Committee on World Food Security; and the creation of an independent monitoring system.
