First High-level Symposium for 2014 DCF Held in Ethiopia
7 June 2013: The first preparatory event for the 2014 UN Development Cooperation Forum (DCF) featured exchanges with stakeholders about the changing development landscape and a "renewed global partnership beyond 2015." Representatives of civil society organizations, the private sector, local governments, and philanthropy participated in the High-Level Symposium. The DCF is a mechanism of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The Symposium took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 6-7 June 2013. Giving the Symposium's opening remarks, Wu Hongbo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, spoke about how the world has changed since the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and development progress that still needs to be reached. Wu said partnerships "should build on existing initiatives and should embrace support by development partners from North and South, as well as the private sector and civil society organizations." He emphasized monitoring and accountability of the responsibilities of development partners.
The DCF will take place in July 2014 in New York, US. Two additional Symposia will be held in preparation, in Switzerland in October 2013, and Germany in early 2014.[ECOSOC Webpage on DCF] [Concept Note for Ethiopia High-Level Symposium] [DESA News Story] [Statement of Wu Hongbo] [Wu Hongbo Press Remarks]
